Objects of the Society includes the uniting of all pipers and drummers in the province to better preserve, promote and encourage participation and proficiency in the music of the pipes, drums and pipe bands.

The PPBSO also administers piping, drumming and pipe band contests at many highland games throughout Ontario.

Originally named the Fort William Pipe Band, the band had changed its name in 1970 to mirror the amalgamation of Fort William and Port Arthur into the city of Thunder Bay. The band performs in Northwestern Ontario, Minnesota and Wisconsin for many parades and events.
